Chromaticism, which consists of a broadening of expressive possibilities through the use of notes that don't belong to the main scale of a work, has served in musical composition to illustrate both the most positive feelings, when associated with the magic and ineffability of the divine, and the darkest and saddest, in the context of the commemoration of the Passion of Christ.
In this programme we contrast chromatic works about the Good News of Advent, by Orlando di Lasso, with others by Gesualdo di Venosa, typical of the Holy Week liturgy, seeing how this wonderful resource can serve such completely antagonistic purposes equally well, in the hands of two of the greatest composers of the European Renaissance.
