Ryuichi Sakamoto is one of the most acclaimed composers on the international scene.
A year after his death, his music continues to be celebrated and to inspire audiences of all generations, bringing together a consensus of rare breadth.
From melodic purity to captivating minimalism, Sakamoto's work evokes an eclectic range of influences, from traditional Japanese music to the work of classical composers such as Bach, Debussy and Schumann.
The iconic soundtracks he created for films such as The Last Emperor, Babel, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence or Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights were brought together in 1996 in the album 1996 - for piano, violin and cello - which was presented on two world tours that decisively consolidated the mythical status of this musician and composer.
In this tribute concert to Sakamoto, we present a selection of works from the 1996 disc, performed according to the original scores, available in a limited and rare edition, supervised and revised by the author himself. The piano, violin and cello trio created by pianist and composer João Vasco is currently one of the few ensembles in the world to perform the 1996 work in concert.
João Vasco is the author of the disc and concert 2016, presented in countries on four continents since 2019, in which he pays homage to Sakamoto, having created musical works inspired by this composer's musical universe, specifically the 1996 disc.
For this concert, we have selected ten pieces from 1996 and four from 2016 and, like Sakamoto's own performances, all the music will be accompanied by video art pieces, conceived for this project by pianist João Vasco, who is also an award-winning photographer and video artist.
