Orquestra XXI
5th by Shostakovich
TICKETS SOON
During the month of July, Orquestra XXI is offering a concert for large orchestra centred on Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony N.º 5. A powerful orchestral piece, it was written during a critical period in the composer's life, when he was facing the open hostility of Stalin. Premiered in 1937, the Symphony N.º 5 was received with enormous enthusiasm, becoming one of the most celebrated works in the orchestral repertoire. Also in this programme, homage will be paid to another of the great figures of the transition to contemporaneity, with a performance of the Four Last Songs for soprano and orchestra by Richard Strauss. Opening this concert, with musical direction by Dinis Sousa, Orquestra XXI will also give the national premiere of Ciprés, by Portuguese composer Andreia Pinto Correia, currently based in the United States of America.
