Orquestra Filarmónica Portuguesa
Piano Concerto in G major
TICKETS SOON
In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel's birth, the Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra is presenting a programme entirely dedicated to the composer, full of magnificent works from his repertoire.
The concert will begin with Suite N.º 2 from Daphnis et Chloé (1912), which starts with Lever du jour (Dawn), where Ravel creates an ethereal and luminous atmosphere with shimmering harmonies and impressionistic orchestral effects. This is followed by a pastoral dance and, finally, the piece culminates with the Danse générale, a rhythmic explosion of orchestral energy and colour.
This is followed by the Piano Concerto in G major (1929-1931), a work influenced by jazz, which Ravel learnt about on his trip to the United States. The concerto combines lightness, virtuosity and orchestral sophistication.
The concert will culminate in La Valse (1919-1920), originally conceived as a tribute to Johann Strauss II's Viennese waltz, but which was eventually transformed into a much darker and more dramatic vision.
