Songs "The Boy's Magic Horn" by G. Mahler

TICKETS SOON

Johann Wolfgang Goethe once said that every home should have at least two essential books: the Bible and Des Knaben Wunderhorn. This collection of 723 songs, compiled between 1805 and 1808 by friends Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano on the basis of old publications and manuscripts from their time, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of German folk Romanticism. The humorous and mundane nature of some of the songs, contrasted with others about the cruel fates of soldiers or transcendental reflections on life after death, were certainly the motto for the brilliant compositions of Austrian composer Gustav Mahler. In some cases, first written for piano and singing and only later orchestrated - Gustav Mahler included some of these songs in his symphonies - they were composed more or less sporadically between 1892 and 1901, and therefore do not constitute a preconceived cycle. In fact, Mahler seems to deliberately leave it up to each performer to decide which songs and in which order they should be performed. Des Knaben Wunderhorn, in this case performed by soprano and baritone and in a chamber orchestra version that emphasises the transparency of the chamber character of Mahler's composition, is above all a journey through the lives of ordinary people. A satire on a world of multiple dimensions and facets, where love and humour live side by side with drama and tragedy.
