This programme focuses on a set of works linked to the journey of the violin as a solo instrument in Portugal in the 18th century, from the beginning of the century, with a marked Spanish influence, to the end, when the Italian imprint was already predominant in Portuguese musical taste. The violin appears here accompanied by the basso continuo, the fundamental nucleus of Baroque musical practice, reflecting the choice of the cello and harpsichord or organ, alternately - as an instrument for realising the improvised harmony envisaged by the composers - also what would have been the instruments used in Portugal at the time, in the generality of domestic and conventual musical practice. The musical programme that makes up this journey through the fragments of a history of the violin in 18th century Portugal thus includes Iberian works, works by Portuguese authors from the time of the Royal Chamber who were not immune to foreign influence (such as Carlos Seixas, Francisco Xavier Baptista and Pedro Lopes Nogueira), works by Italian authors who lived part of their lives in Portugal, such as Domenico Scarlatti, and even works by authors whose Portuguese influence was felt, such as Tartini and his rare Sonata sopra lo stile che suona il Prette dalla Chitarra Portoghese, in which he evokes the erudite epistolographist Abade António da Costa (1714-1780).
