Branco plays Marco Paulo is a project by guitarist Pedro Branco that began in 2021 and will have its disc released in 2025. The project is based on a reinterpretation of the vast artistic work of the famous Portuguese singer Marco Paulo in a formation that Branco has not yet explored, the jazz trio format. He is joined by João Sousa on drums and Carlos Barretto on double bass.
The project began with an interpretation of songs exclusively taken from the album Ver e Amar (1970), a work by Marco Paulo that is little known to the general public. To this repertoire were added arrangements of well-known themes such as Eu tenho dois amores, Sempre que brilha o sol or Joana.
The aim of the project is to bring together two musical languages that are quite different in their purpose and aesthetics, but which find in this dichotomy common traits that become relevant musical moments. The invitation to one of the historical figures of Portuguese jazz, Carlos Barretto, also aims to find new solutions within distant musical ideas. The songs are stripped down to their essence and the end result mixes contemporary improvisation with classics from Portuguese pop culture, without losing the sense of humour and performative unpredictability.
